Optimising gas and liquid flows with computational fluid dynamics

Computational fluid dynamics, or CFD, allows to visualise gas and liquid flow behaviour. This type of process modelling allows to study and improve mixing issues, ventilation systems, heat distributions, ... . The presentation starts with a short introduction in the technique and contains some examples to inspire you.

Metal additive manufacturing is not only a question of printing

Additive manufacturing is steadily finding its place as new manufacturing technology and offers many opportunities also for metals. However, beyond the printing of a complex part and finding the right process parameters to do so, many aspects should be taken into account to profit at maximum of the technology such as alloy design, selection of the appropriate printing technology, including the hybrid manufacturing concept, the thermal post-treatments to achieve the right properties as well as surface finishing and part’s characterisation. All those different aspects will be dealt with in the presentation and illustrated with results of different research projects running at CRM.

Het testen van 3D-Geprinte componenten

Het 3D printen van technische componenten heeft intussen voldoende maturiteit gehaald om in een steeds breder scala van sectoren en applicaties als volwaardige productietechnologie ingezet te worden. Dit betekent ook dat afnemers garanties vragen op de constante kwaliteit van de geproduceerde stukken. Leveranciers van deze 3D- componenten moeten dus de nodige kwaliteitsopvolgingsystemen gaan inbouwen in hun productie. Dit levert nieuwe uitdagingen over heel de keten aangezien bij 3D-printen de creatie van de component als van het materiaal vaak op hetzelfde moment gebeurd.

Overview on energy efficiency in painting technology

Painting is one of the most energy demanding processes. Inside paint shops most often it ist he spray booth and the ovens that uses huge amout of energy. Meassures will be shown to improve the energy consumption, starting from state of the art to ideas for the future as avoiding overspray and self controlling ovens.

Development of 18Ni maraging steel to optimize the very high cycle fatigue properties

At Bosch Transmission Technology B.V. high strength maraging steels are applied for the mass production of pushbelts for CVT applications. To secure the pushbelt behaviour in the Very High Cycle Fatigue area (>10 million load cycles) the VHCF properties of four 18Ni maraging steels are investigated in cooperation with BOKU, Institute of Physics and Materials Science (Vienna). Ultrasonic fatigue tests are performed on thin sheets with gas nitrided surfaces. Traditional maraging steel is compared to Titanium-free maraging steels with different Cobalt contents. The influence of different types of non-metallic inclusions on fatigue crack initiation and VHCF strength will be presented.

Elemental analysis of Metals - XRF or spark OES?

Spectro can offer 3 instruments for fast metal analysis: The xSORT, using XRF technique, and the spectroport/spectrotest (using spark-OES technique). Both techniques use the principals of spectrometry, but the preparation, speed of analysis, handling and precision are different. This lecture will go over the differences between both techniques. This is of great importance when choosing the right instrument for incoming/outgoing quality control.
